We had an incredible time exploring Quebec… and Quebec in general, where we stayed in the desert at Sacacombe, took an epic helicopter ride around the Mastigouche Wildlife Sanctuary and finally into Quebec City.

The province of Quebec is special; and Quebec is no exception!

So, to help you make the most of your time, take a look at some of the best things to do in Quebec during your visit. Have the most incredible time in Canada.

Once here, you can walk around the fortifications, which are a great way to get a good idea of Quebec’s history. While walking through the Artillery Park, be sure to stop at the Arsenal Foundry and pay attention to the Dauphine Redoubt.

The latter is one of the oldest military bases in all of Canada. There is literally centuries of history within these walls.

Don’t forget that you can also go on a tour. Oh, and remember, the fortifications are open during the warmer months from April to October each year. This is a great way to see historic Quebec and history going back almost 500 years.

Afterwards, be sure to visit the Levi Forts, which are well worth a visit if you want to understand the historical British presence in the region.

Yes, it’s across the St. Lawrence River, but it’s easily accessible by ferry from the Clarence-Gagnon Monument (and then a 20-minute walk).

Visit the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré.

If you want to explore some of Quebec’s most iconic buildings, you should definitely check out the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. It’s one of Canada’s eight national shrines and one of the best things to do in Quebec while exploring the city’s outskirts.

Overlooking the St. Lawrence River, the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré is about a 30-minute drive from Old Quebec, but it’s well worth the trip.

First built in the 17th century, it is a great place to learn more about the pilgrimages that take place each year. Be sure to walk through the Altar and see the stunning Stations of the Cross. The whole place is simply breathtaking and worth a visit.

Quebec Bridge

Bridges in cities are a thing, right? Like the Tower Bridge in London and the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, Quebec has its own famous bridge – the Pont de Quebec.

Now, after a walk through the Plage-Jacques-Cartier park, you can easily look at the Quebec Bridge. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of Forth Bridge in Edinburgh.

The bridge itself may seem a little boring to those visiting Quebec, but it’s worth a stroll if you’re looking for a cooler day in the city. However, if you are not up for a walk or the weather is not on your side, it is best to skip the walk.

Afterwards, head to Old Quebec and grab a table at La Buche Restaurant. They serve one of the best Chomer puddings with a dollop of maple syrup. Just be sure to book in advance, especially on weekends.

This is a great way to see the city and one of the best things to do in Quebec with a fully knowledgeable guide.

Chateau Frontenac

Arguably one of Quebec’s most iconic sites, Chateau Frontenac is something of an institution and one of the best things to do in Quebec while exploring the historic center.

It is easily accessible from Old Quebec by cable car. This is a great place to stay or even stop in for dinner and cocktails.

We really enjoyed our time at Chateau Frontenac and it is so centrally located that it makes it easy to explore historic Quebec.

Plus, if you decide to stay, you can book some of its iconic suites, designed with some of its famous guests in mind. Suites dedicated to Alfred Hitchcock, Celine Dion and others. They are so great.

Quebec Parliament building

When visiting Quebec, be sure to visit the Parliament building, which is located in the very center of the city.

First built back in the 1800s, it is one of the most iconic parliament buildings in all of Canada. And the best part is that you can actually join a really interesting tour in French and English.

Tours take approximately 1 hour and will give you a thorough understanding of the Parliament and the history of Quebec.

Afterwards, stop by Chez Rioux and Pettigrew for a bite to eat. Their seared scallops are everything.

Plains of Abraham

Easily visited while cycling between Quebec’s historic old town and the Quebec Bridge, the Plains of Abraham are worth a visit while in the city.

During the winter months, you can go to the ice skating rink and also see the views from Gray’s Terrace (which are beautiful, by the way).

Oh, and don’t forget to visit the Plains of Abraham Museum. Just remember to dress warmly during the cold winter months. The weather can become completely stormy. Believe me, no one likes a cold walk!

Look, you can’t visit Quebec without visiting its historic center. This is one of the best things to do in Quebec, especially because of its quaint charm and absolutely beautiful buildings.

Personally, I wouldn’t say you need a tour of Old Quebec and highly recommend spending a few hours just wandering the cobblestone streets.

Once here, be sure to visit the nearby Basilica of Notre-Dame de Quebec and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

In addition, you will have plenty of time to stop for lunch or a cup of tea in one of the small cafes. We also really enjoyed the antique shops on Rue Saint-Pierre.

Every day we spent in the city, we made sure to walk around Old Quebec, and we really enjoyed it.

Just be sure to make dinner reservations in advance. During peak hours they fill up really quickly; especially tasty places.

Royal Square

Yes! I know I already mentioned visiting the historic district of Quebec, but I had to mention Place Royal separately.

In the heart of Old Quebec, Place Royal is a stunning cobbled square that has been around since the early 1600s.

Place Royale, named after Louis XIV, is one of the best things to do in Quebec while exploring the city. Moreover, this is of such great importance to the French population that first settled in America. You see, this is the very place where Samuel de Champlain established the first and lasting French settlement.

There is so much history in this historic square.

While strolling, stop by the L’Oncle Antoine pub. It’s a completely different and traditional boozer that also has delicious sandwiches.

That being said, you can also stop by  Maison Smith  for hot tea and homemade cakes. They are so good.

Citadel of Quebec

The Citadel of Quebec is still an active military post that you can still visit.

Once here, you can jump over to see the changing of the guard ceremony (it’s a piece of history worth watching). This happens often on summer mornings and is a great way to get a glimpse of the 22nd Canadian Regiment that guards the area.

Also be sure to visit the exhibitions inside. Some of them are seasonal, others are permanent. They are worth a visit; especially the Gallery of Honor and Memory.

Love a good winter trip to Quebec? Then you should definitely visit the Winter Carnival in Quebec. If you’re in Quebec during January and February, you definitely need to attend. This is one of the best things to do in Quebec and it’s a lot of fun.

Typically a two-week winter celebration, it is the perfect carnival for the whole family. The annual tradition includes building giant snowmen and a giant ice castle. This is all a lot of fun if you have gloves; It’s terrible if not!

Oh, and there are cute dogs that compete in snow dog races. Enjoy the holiday and be sure to stop by the Ice Palace. We love it.
